You may be queer. Regardless, you are unequivocally natural normal. Yes you may be queer, yet you're love is perfectly perfect. You may be a queer man or woman, a queer Latino, African, a queer Asian, Arab, Protestant, Catholic, Buddhist,...

This speech is impassioned, but will fall upon deaf ears for what can be done about the problems expressed. Nothing there. If America is likely to remain an ever-growing pool of bitterness and puritanical encroachment, why not suggest that gay Americans follow the wisdom of German intellectuals like Einstein who were confronted by rising Nazism ... RUN!
When asked by family and friends why I have forever left America to live in the Czech Republic, my comment is always "You are not responsible for where you are born: you are only responsible for remaining there if you can leave." I agree with Mr. Kramer that most of us are highly intelligent ... hence, I must add, mobile. There is nothing "unpatriotic" about becoming an "expat" -- America was founded by those who often left places they were despised for freedoms and a grander future elsewhere. So, my fellow Americans (a rather presidential statement), embrace the truest of American virtues like self-sufficiency and exploration, and get the hell out of that hell-hole in which you are living. Go West! Go East! Go South! Or, perhaps an easier Go North! Find a place where rights are extended, places which would care less about your sexuality and more about your warmth and gusto and brilliance. Run!!!
After ten years in the Czech Republic, I have no regrets about my permanent departure from America. In fact, my dreaded moment of each year is my return to visit my parents ... especially that military (police) idiot at the end of the Customs line who says "Welcome home" (before asking me politely a half-dozen questions which appear to arise from interest but actually arise upon his computer screen as part of his subtle investigation process). Here things are different ... the last bastion of Skepticism and Atheism and other pleasant -isms ... and no one cares. That is the best aspect. Europe is a better place than America, a place where good, Catholic Spaniards can wave their middle finger at the Pope in Rome and vote according to principle and conscience in a way that those in Bible Land dare not. My only advice is RUN! Adolph is on the move ...

Regardless of how you feel about what Kramer says, no one can doubt that this speech will surely go down as a classic in gay history.
Thanks for reprinting it Patrick.
