It wasn't only cruel because they were gay, it was cruel because they were human beings. The way I look at it is yes I feel for those people but I feel more for the little children. At least these people had a little understanding of what was going on. I have a 3 and four year old and they don't know where we're going until we get there. Can you imagine them taking those children to murder them and half of them don't understand what's going on until they feel the actual pain. Some of them probably died and never realized what was going on. I've seen pictures of families getting sent to those death camps and their children smiling at the cameras.Do you think they would have been smiling had they known what was going to happen to them. No, they were beautiful innocent little children who had committed no crime in their lives. They were simply born the wrong race.

Recently, a colleague read at least some of this entry and remarked that he had not ever known about the plight of homosexuals during the Nazi Era. Also, he seemed to imply disbelief as to its authenticity. I was thunderstruck with the idea that some might choose to simply say it never happened rather than acknowledge the parallels between the treatment of homosexuals then and now.

It's all a matter of degrees: Who oppressed homosexual people the most dramatically and cruelly thoughout history? What was the nature of the suffering and stigmatization experienced by homosexuals in different parts of the world? Which society and era was more civilized, barbaric, violent, passive, welcoming or rejecting of their homosexual citizens?

I ask, does it really matter? In most cases, we homosexuals are usually the losers. Equality under the law might at least shelter us somewhat from the forgetful, fickle and fanatical aspects of society.
